About this ball

The Test Grade 2 Layer White Ball is the mid-range option in Crystal Sports' white leather ball lineup — a step above the League Special with a dual-layer winding construction that improves shape retention, hardness and durability across an innings. It is suited to club matches, higher-grade league fixtures and any game where the ball is expected to perform consistently for a full 20 or 40 overs.

The two-layer construction means the core is wound in two distinct layers before the leather is applied, creating a denser, more symmetrical ball that holds its hardness for longer than a single-layer construction. This directly benefits both bowlers — who get more consistent seam and swing behaviour — and batsmen, who face a more predictable surface. The raised seam is stitched for proper swing movement in white-ball conditions.

White leather is the standard for all T20 and limited-overs formats. The 2 Layer sits between the League Special (entry level) and the Test Grade 5 Layer (premium) — a practical choice for sides who play regular competitive cricket and need a ball that performs well without the cost of a five-layer match ball.

Frequently asked questions

Layer winding refers to how many times the interior cork core is wound with thread before the leather outer is applied. A 2 layer winding creates a denser, harder core than a single-layer ball, which means the ball retains its hardness and shape for longer during play. This is important for bowlers who rely on consistent seam position and for the ball to continue swinging deep into an innings.
The League Special is the entry-level club ball. The Test Grade 2 Layer uses dual-layer winding for improved shape retention and consistency. The Test Grade 5 Layer is the premium option — five layers of winding produce the hardest, most symmetrical and longest-lasting ball in the range. The more layers, the better the ball performs over an extended innings.
Yes — the Test Grade 2 Layer is well suited for regular club league fixtures, particularly T20 and one-day formats. It offers a meaningful step up from the League Special in durability without the cost of the five-layer premium ball.
